BusinessWeek Redesign

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

I don’t usually buy business magazines, unless I was featured there :) or if something caught my eye. Such as a large Apple logo on the cover. But there’s more to it than just Apple as a cover feature. It’s the redesign of BusinessWeek. It’s been a while since they have their magazine and website redesigned, but I never really pay attention to it. I like the way they maintain the superbly readable body text with a nice leading and all, but the main punch for me is that they managed to switch from a classic to a modern look, and they did it. The layout is consistent and by far it bests most of Indonesian’s typical business magazine (I don’t have to name them here, as most real designers know that most of them are designed poorly, and they obviously look crappy).

But in all good things, there’s always a flaw:

Yes, that one came from Amazon’s Search Inside!™ feature. The least they can do is buy the book and scan off the cover, or they could simply Google the image. I found a few even bigger than the image they’re using. But I wouldn’t take this as BusinessWeek’s entire mistake. This is Indonesia, even franchises can afford to suck.

Indonesian Idiocy

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

I don’t usually read detik.com. To me, it’s just another Indonesian advertisement-filled not-standards-compliant news website. In short, an ugly-designed website. Period. But for some reason today, I thought I pay a visit and see what’s on its latest news.

Then I found this. And it really tickles me to drop in a comment. For you who don’t read Indonesian, it’s basically a news about a guy got caught because he accidentally killed a pedestrian and ran away. The thing is, he’s driving a car in the highway, and the pedestrian is a guy who’s TRYING TO CROSS the goddamned highway.

So who do you think is left to blame? The highway crosser, or the driver? I’d say the crosser. But this is Indonesia, where the big one’s always get the blame. A guy crossing the street without using the zebra cross and got hit by car, the car is wrong. A motorcycle hit its sorry ass to a car, the car is still wrong. Is our country dumb? Oh, be sure that it IS.

FREON-less AC

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

I read this news on Engadget. Two recently graduated high school students have just invented the world’s first freon-less air conditioner. That is way cool! (both literally and unliterally…)

Now, you sucker high school boys and girls, this is the kind of thing you’re supposed to be doing… Do something useful for the nation! Not just thinking and trying to look cool and all, dressing up hip-hop style, like you know how to rap or even know hip-hop itself, or depleting your dad’s money to buy 19 or 20 inch rims to be used on a 1300cc car on standard brakes (talking about safety), or buying a dazzling and useless ICE system, or even spending five to ten millions worth of cash to buy the latest cellphones, only for taking pictures or SMSes. No, not that you need a new phone, but just to look cool, without even knowing what’s in your damned cellphone. No wonder our country’s going deeper down the hole.

Apple with Intel?

Tuesday, June 7th, 2005

Apple really did confirm that they’re moving to Intel for their chips… Hmm… I’m a really big fan of Apple because of its un-uniformity with Intel-based PCs. So I guess we’ll see how it goes from here, I’m still holding my faith to Apple though =).

More details on CNET.

GF was Hacked!

Wednesday, March 16th, 2005

Today morning I got confused when I opened Godote because… It wasn’t there. And I got a feeling that it was hacked. After I got home from the campus, I checked it again and it’s still not there. Apparently my hunch was right…

For some reasons before today, sometimes I supported those “hackerly” actions, especially to governmental sites like well you know… Ours… Cause I thought maybe, and MAYBE that way they could somehow realize that they are not so powerful, that they are also as vulnerable as us… But today, I was wondering why someone would hacked GF. I mean, come on, it’s only a design forum, and it’s not even governmental related. This is the time where I think that those people who have high “hackerly” skills sometimes don’t have quality thinking in their heads. Related to their social environments perhaps? This is just a matter of my opinion…
