Toyota Corolla TE-71
January 30th, 2006

Yesterday night, Nyonyo sent me those pictures. I don’t know what he was thinking, but he intentionally made me want to build one of those. As much as I love Japanese vintage cars, I never saw anyone with such passion restored an old Corolla in a such perfect beauty. Unfortunately, Nyonyo forgot where he got these photos from. All he knows that this photo was taken in Japan. Anyway, lots of respect and credits to the owner of the car, whoever that is. I’m sure he has a unquestionable taste of automobiles.
Although old, the Toyota Corolla TE-71, or better known as the Corolla DX in Indonesia is probably still one of the best breeds of Corolla to date. A nicely balanced small sedan with moderate comfort and cruise quality, just perfect for my style of driving. Even my Dad used to drive one when I was small.
The reason that I want to buy a second hand TE-71 and restore it is due to the fact that this version of the car is crawling all over Jakarta, and most of them are not well-maintained. So building one to match the quality of that in the photo will surely be a pride of its own. And being realistic, building a TE-71 is of course a far cheaper project than restoring an AE86. Can you imagine what a TE-71 will perform with a 4A-GE engine?
I just love vintage Toyotas, and now I think I’ve made up another future resolution. Nyo, you better pay for what you influenced me with…
